Deep Dive into History & Culture

The Akita Kanto Festival (Kanto Matsuri) is one of the most representative summer festivals in the Tohoku region of Japan, held annually in Akita City, and is world-renowned for its unique and spectacular pole lantern performances. The origin of this festival can be traced back to the Edo period, when it was a "Nemuri Nagashi" (meaning "driving away sleepiness") event held to ward off summer epidemics and pray for a bountiful harvest. Over time, it evolved into a grand celebration showcasing skill, balance, and teamwork. During the festival, hundreds of performers hold Kanto poles up to 12 meters long and weighing up to 50 kilograms. The number and weight of the lanterns symbolize a rich harvest of rice. These Kanto are skillfully balanced and moved, rotating on the performers' foreheads, shoulders, wrists, and even waists, resembling ears of golden rice composed of lanterns swaying in the night sky, creating a breathtaking visual feast. Watching the Kanto Festival not only allows you to experience Japan's traditional summer culture but also feel the passion and vitality of the people of the Akita region. The entire city is filled with a festive atmosphere, accompanied by the sounds of "Hayashi" (festival music) and the shouts of "Dokkoisho!," immersing you in this charming traditional festival.
