Tenjin Matsuri

The Tenjin Matsuri is one of Japan's three major festivals and Osaka's grandest. Held annually on July 24th and 25th, it centers around Osaka Tenmangu Shrine. This festival boasts a long history, dating back to the Heian period. It was originally held to worship Sugawara no Michizane, the deity of scholarship and arts, praying for favorable weather and the expulsion of epidemics. The festival's climax occurs on the evening of the 25th with water and land parades. Numerous gorgeously decorated boats parade along the river, while people in traditional attire march along the banks, creating a spectacular scene. The highlight is the fireworks display over the water, pushing the festive atmosphere to its peak and attracting countless visitors from both Japan and abroad. The Tenjin Matsuri is more than just a religious ceremony; it's a grand event showcasing the vitality and traditional culture of Osaka's citizens. Various food stalls (yatai) line the streets, offering a wide array of food and games, allowing participants to deeply experience the liveliness and fun of a Japanese summer festival.
